Mental arithmetic shortcuts look like sleight of hand and are mostly just structure. Squaring a number ending in five, multiplying by eleven, converting an awkward percentage into an easy one.
Each of these has a reason underneath it. The point is not to memorise the trick but to see the structure that makes it work — which is why the explanations show the mechanism rather than just the result.

Question 1
A calculator shows 101 - 10 = 11. It is not broken. What number system is it using?
Why: In binary, 101 is 5, 10 is 2, and 11 is 3, so the equation is correct.
Question 2
A number is 20% larger than another. By what percent is the second number smaller than the first?
Why: If the smaller number is 100, the larger is 120. The drop is 20 out of 120.
Question 3
You double a number, add 10, divide by 2, and subtract the original number. Why is the answer always 5?
Why: The expression becomes (2x+10)/2 - x, which simplifies to 5.
Question 4
Which is better: a 30% discount then 20% discount, or 50% discount once?
Why: 30% then 20% leaves 56% of the price, so the discount is 44%.
Question 5
A clock gains 10 minutes hourly and reads 3 PM after six real hours. What did it display at the start?
Why: In six real hours the clock advances seven displayed hours, so a 3 PM reading began at 8 AM.
Question 6
Multiply any nonzero whole number by 9, then repeatedly sum its digits. What number remains?
Why: Every positive multiple of 9 has digital root 9.
Question 7
What is 25% of 80, and why does the reverse trick work?
Why: 25% of 80 equals 80% of 25, which is easier: 20.
Question 8
What is 15% of 200 without a calculator?
Why: 10% is 20 and 5% is 10, so together they make 30.
Question 9
What is 11 times 23 using the quick middle-digit trick?
Why: For 23 x 11, keep 2 and 3 outside, then put 2+3 in the middle.
Question 10
What is 99 x 47 using the shortcut?
Why: 100 x 47 is 4700. Subtract 47 to get 4653.
Question 11
What is the square of 35 using the ending-in-5 shortcut?
Why: 3 x 4 gives 12, then add 25.
Question 12
Which is bigger: 40% of 70 or 70% of 40?
Why: Percent multiplication can swap order: 0.4 x 70 equals 0.7 x 40.
Question 13
What number becomes larger when you turn it upside down?
Why: Turn a 6 upside down and it becomes 9.
Question 14
What is 50% of 2 plus 2?
Why: 50% of 2 is 1, then add 2.
Question 15
A number doubled and then doubled again becomes 64. What was it?
Why: Doubling twice means multiplying by 4, so 64 divided by 4 is 16.
