Illusions are not failures of the eye. They are the visual system doing exactly what it evolved to do: guess.

Your eyes do not measure light and report it. Vision infers a scene — it takes ambiguous patterns of light and works out what arrangement of surfaces and illumination most likely produced them. That inference does enormous work and is almost always right, which is why you can recognize a friend in a dim room or read a page in shifting light without noticing anything unusual.

Illusions are the specific cases engineered to make a normally excellent strategy produce a wrong answer. The checker-shadow illusion works because your visual system correctly discounts a shadow. It is compensating for lighting exactly as it should, and that compensation is what makes two identical greys look different.

This explains something people find genuinely strange: knowing the trick does not stop you seeing it. Being told two squares are the same shade does not make them look the same, because the inference happens well before anything reaches conscious thought. You cannot decide to see raw pixel values any more than you can decide to stop understanding a sentence in your own language.
